I do not often read literary fiction, but one book I read in recent years is Burnt Shadows, by Kamila Shamsie. Just the words ‘Burnt Shadows’ are, to me, beautiful words. And they appear to derive from a stanza written by Sahir Ludhianvi:
In past wars only homes burnt, but this time
Don’t be surprised if even loneliness ignites.
In past wars only bodies burnt, but this time
Don’t be surprised if even shadows ignite.
What beautiful, evocative imagery!
